Obituary of Roland G. Niles

Roland G. Niles Unadilla—Roland George Niles, 77, of Unadilla, passed away on Friday, January 29, 2016 at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford. Roland was born on March 14, 1938 in Oxford, NY, son of the late Roland L. and Gladys (Walker) Niles. He served his country in the US Navy from 1957 until his honorable discharge in 1961. Roland received his Associates Degree from Delhi and went on to have a 35 year career as a computer programmer with Raymond Corp. in Greene. On July 24, 1965, he was married to Betty Faye Bliss. Roland was a longtime member of Afton Baptist Church and participated in various church activities. He also enjoyed woodworking. He liked to be kept busy and was happy to oblige his wife with whatever task she needed done. He was the finest husband a wife could want, as well as a devoted father and grandfather. He is survived by: his wife of 50 years, Betty Faye Bliss of Unadilla; daughter, Heather and Donald Barber of Unadilla; son, Brian and Jayme Niles of Blair, NE; 3 grandchildren: Derek Powell of Anchorage, AK, Taylor and Nikolas Niles of Blair, NE; 3 sisters: Ann Peterson of Binghamton, Rachel and Charles Holmes of Elmira and Phyllis Cutting of Watkins Glen; brother, Gerald and Jerri Niles of Powhatan, VA; sister-in-law, Phyllis Niles of Bainbridge; as well as many nieces and nephews. Roland was predeceased by his brother, Donald Niles, Sr. and his sister, Janice Heslin. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at the Afton Baptist Church, Caswell St. Afton, NY 13730. Burial will take place in the spring in West Bainbridge Cemetery. Memorial donations in Roland's name may be directed to the NYS Veterans Home, 4207 St. Hwy 220 Oxford, NY 13830.
