Obituary of Jerome V. Mertz

Jerome V. Mertz - Sidney, NY Jerome V. Mertz 96, of Sidney passed away Friday, February 5, 2016 at the NYS Veterans Home in Oxford. He was born December 9, 1919, son of the late Joe and Ellen (Jerome) Mertz in Brooklyn. Jerry served his country honorably in the United States Coast Guard from 1942-45. He later married Phyllis MacDonald on July 30, 1945 in Sackets Harbor, NY. She predeceased him on December 12, 1985. Jerry owned and operated Mertz's Mobil Station in Afton and the Central Service Gas Station in Sidney for many years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Sidney Elks Lodge and the Sidney American Legion. Jerry was well known for his kind manner. He loved all of the customers he served, his church family and the friends he made at the Sidney Great American. He is survived by Son – Fred Mertz, Sidney & Daughter, Faye Stockwell, Raleigh, NC Grandchildren – Eric Mertz and Jamie Price, Bainbridge Kevin (Sara) Stockwell, Garner, NC April Stockwell, Charleston, SC Ashlee (Tom) Donahue, Smithville Flats, NY Great grandchildren – Brody, Callie, Caden, Ella, Brenner and Beckham Brothers, George (Madeline) Mertz, Bainbridge & Alfred Mertz, Sidney Sisters – Ellen Hogan, Sidney Theresa Horton, Sidney, Gussie Shifflett, Florida Several nieces, nephews and cousins Friends may call Monday, February 8, 2016 from 6-8 PM at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel 21 Main St. Sidney. A mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, February 9, at 11:00 AM with Rev. Bernard Osei Ampong, Pastor of Sacred Heart Church officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.
