Obituary of Harlan W. Stringer

Harlan W. Stringer, 87, of Sidney, passed away on January 19, 2021 at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton. He was born on September 22, 1933 in Masonville, son of the late Leland W. and Flora Jennie (Dewey) Stringer. Harlan was proud to serve his country in the US Army during the Korean Era, enlisting in 1953.
On December 20, 1953, he was married to Shirley E. Tuckey, sharing nearly 63 happy years together before she predeceased him in 2016.
Harlan worked for the Village of Sidney as a heavy equipment operator before becoming the Superintendent of Public Works, retiring in 1988 after 37 years of service. Later he worked for Charlie Cutting as a heavy equipment operator, and as a serviceman for Mirabitos.
He was a handyman who could fix just about anything. He took pride in his home, keeping an immaculate lawn. He also enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels. He was a dedicated member of the Sidney American Legion Post 0183 for 52 years.
Harlan is survived by: three children: Bonnie and Robin Perry of Guilford, Cindy and Jack Doyle of Sidney and Butch and Donna Stringer of Sidney; 6 grandchildren, each of whom would like to claim being his favorite: Casey (Jason) Baker, Andrew (Tracie) Doyle, Tina (Dean) Fairchild, Melissa (Rob) Davis, Meagan (Tony) Doty and Sierra (Trevor) Beames; 12 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter; two sisters: Rosalyn (Dan) VanWagner of Florida and Beverly (Alan) Hollister of Tennessee; sisters-in-law, Donna Stringer of Colorado and Janette Belcher of New York Mills as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his beloved wife Shirley, he was predeceased by his brothers: Donald, Douglas, Ivan, and Theron (Robert), and sisters, Natalie (Jean) and Lenore.
Burial will take place in Prospect Hill Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to his grandson's church, As I Am Church, 20 S. Broad Street, Norwich, NY 13815. Share condolences and memories with the family online at www.landersfh.com.
