Irma T. Haller died Friday, August 20, 2010 at her home. She was born August 25, 1937, daughter of the late Tullio and Margaretha Tognola in Bainbridge.
Irma is survived by her husband of 45 years, Hans R. "Rudy" Haller of Guilford
Brother, Edmund Tognola and his wife Patricia of Shrewsbury, NJ
Sister-in-law, Susanna Burgin-Haller and her husband Albert of Geneva, Switzerland.
Cousins in Switzerland and one in the USA, nieces and nephews in Europe and USA
Irma graduate from Sidney Central School Class 1955. She graduated with a BA from NYS College for Teachers in Albany Class of 1959.
In 1962, Irma graduated from Boston University with a Masters degree in Teaching of Social Studies
After graduating from Albany, Irma taught ninth grade social studies at Chenango Valley Junior-Senior High School from 1959-1964.
After getting married, she returned to her hometown and taught English 8 & 9 and Social Studies 8&9 at the Sidney Junior High School. Later she taught English and Social Studies 9, English 10, Journalism, Economics and Government 12. Irma taught 38 years in Sidney and enjoyed a career of over 42 years.
Outside the classroom, Irma was the chairperson of the Social Studies Dept. from1986-2002, was a charter member of the Business Education Community partnership, was a member and chairperson of the Teacher Education Advisory Board at SUNY Oneonta 1983-1997. She was chosen Teacher of the Years 1997-1998; she was included in Who's who in America Education. Irma also advised the Junior High Newspaper/Yearbook "Maroon and White" for seven years and "Spotlight on Sidney High" in the Tri-town News. She co-advised the Odyssey of the Mind Team that went to the World's at Central Michigan University.
Friends may call Tuesday, August 24, 2010 from11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel 21 Main St. Sidney. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 PM with Rev. Pat Robinson officiating.
Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery
