Obituary of Nancy Sue Burns

Nancy Sue Burns, 85 years old, took her first breath in heaven on December 8, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by her daughters Lori, Lisa and Amy. Nancy Sue was born on June 29, 1937, to Madeline and Lawrence Haynes in Sidney, New York. From an early age she was interested in journalism. In high school, Nancy wrote for Newsreel, a school column in the Sidney Record – Enterprise. She then went on to Keuka College and graduated with a degree in journalism. After graduating she briefly worked in Philadelphia before returning to her hometown in Sidney, permanently. Nancy Sue began working at the Sidney Tri-Town News in 1973, was promoted to Editor in 1985, and retired in 2016 after 43 years of dedicated service. Nancy Sue was a prominent member of the Tri-Town community. In 1986 she received the First Lady Award from Beta Sigma Phi. In 1996 she was granted the Vocational Services Award by the Rotary Club of Sidney and recognized as Citizen of the Year in 2002, by the Sidney Chamber of Commerce. Nancy Sue was devoted member of the Sidney United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for over 40 years. Many people knew of Nancy and her husband Ray's love of travel through her column "On the Road Again" which was published in the Sidney Tri-Town News. She also was an avid bear collector and loved looking for additions to her collection. Nancy enjoyed being a grandma and much of her free time was spent with her grandchildren. Her family was the most important part of her life. Nancy Sue is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Ray Burns, her three daughters, Lori-Sue Burns (Fred Worden) of Cape Haze, FL, Lisa Burns (John Pendergrass) of Wilmington, NC, and Amy (Chris Cuozzo) of Guilford, NY as well as her grandchildren Makenzie and Jacob Cuozzo. Additional survivors include stepchildren Sherry (John Proskine) of Roaring Springs, PA and Gary (Pam) Burns of Endicott, NY as well as their children and grandchildren. The family would like to thank the Chenango County Hospice, especially Natalie, Mary, Logan, Kelly, Melissa, and Jeanette for their help, kindness, and compassion during their mother's illness. A heartfelt thanks also goes to our dear friend Tracy Graney for her love, support, and guidance throughout this difficult time. A celebration of life for Nancy Sue will be held at a later date.
