Obituary of Peter Carroll Vail
Please share a memory of Peter to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Peter Carroll Vail, 84, of Afton NY, passed away on January 11, 2023 at the Willow Point Nursing Home.
He was born at home in Afton, NY to Carroll and Gertrude Vail on January 13, 1938. He attended high school in Afton and went on to Michigan University, where he earned his bachelor's degree of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
He was a member of the Air Force ROTC from 1961-1966. Pete had a long career as a manager at IBM. He had a strong work ethic, and his employees loved him. Upon retirement, he worked for 20 years at the Afton Golf Course as a "fairway grass height reduction specialist". Pete was also very active in the Afton Fire Department as a commissioner and as secretary to the commissioners and he substitute taught for the Afton School District.
Pete had a very deep faith. He was very active in St. Ann's Episcopal Church and in the Diocese of Central NY Cursillo movement. He loved music and he played the cornet and guitar. He was involved in the IBM Glee Club, the Binghamton Symphony Chorus, Afton Community Chorus, and he was director of the ROTC band. Peter instilled the following words of wisdom: treat others as you would like to be treated; leave where you have been, a little better than you found it and what you do is not nearly as important as whether you enjoy it.
Pete is predeceased by his parents, Carroll and Gertrude Vail, his half-sister Janet Johnson, his granddaughter Claire McSorley and his sisters-in-law, Connie Williams and Beverly Beebe
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Carol Ann (Williams) Vail and his brother and sister-in-law Tom and Betty Vail and their children Kathy and Dan and family; his sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Bob Giblin; his daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Philip Kosick; his daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Terry McSorley; his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Jens Curtis; his son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Yan Vail and 7 grandchildren, Brittany, Taylor, Caitlin, Morgan, Connor, Cole, and Mila.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to our home health aides, (some who became like family), for their wonderful care and to the incredibly kind staff at Willow Point Nursing Home. Memorial donations may be made to St. Ann's Episcopal Church at 125 Main St. Afton, NY 13730.
