Obituary of Theresa E. Horton

Theresa E. Mertz Horton Theresa E Mertz Horton age 93, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 1st, 2023 at Bridgewater Nursing Facility in Binghamton NY. Theresa was born March 17th, 1930 in Bainbridge NY to Joseph and Ellen Mertz. She grew up with her 9 siblings on a farm on Mertz Road in West Bainbridge . Theresa graduated in 1947 from Bainbridge High School. Theresa married Richard Horton, who predeceased her in 2007, on May 19th, 1972.She had a career in the food industry first as a waitress at the Oxford Inn and then as a long time employee of the former Victory Restaurant in Sidney, she also worked as a cook and then managed many small restaurants in upstate NY with her husband. They lived in the Hamilton, NY area, Alexandria Bay NY and eventually settled in Myrtle Beach South Carolina after retirement. Upon the death of her husband in 2007, Theresa returned to Sidney to be near her sisters and brothers. She resided in Sidney from 2007 until January of 2023 when she moved to Binghamton with her niece and then entered the Bridgewater Nursing Facility in March until she passed away on August 1st. Besides her parents and husband, Theresa was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph, Jerome, Frederick and Alfred, her sisters Loretta Frank, Veronica Shupperd and Rita Mertz. Theresa is survived by her sisters, Ellen Hogan, Sidney, Augusta Shifflett of Florida and a brother George Mertz of Bainbridge. She is also survived by two step sons, Richard Horton (Connie) of Nashville TN and Douglas (Amy) Horton of Alexandria Bay NY, three step grandchildren Hunter (Joey), summer and Margaret. Theresa had many nieces and nephews who survive and she held dear to her heart. Her family would like to thank the staff, nurses and certified nursing assistants on Floor2A of Bridgewater Nursing Facility for the wonderful care that they gave Theresa and her family while she was a patient at the facility Theresa loved life and lived it to the fullest. We will miss her every day. Calling hours for Theresa will be Sunday, August 6th, 2023 from 2 until 4 PM at CH Landers Funeral Chapel at 21Main street Sidney NY. A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Liberty Street Sidney on Monday August 7th at 11:00AM with Father Dr Bernard Ampong officiating. Burial will follow at Prospect Cemetery Sidney.
