Obituary of Lorena "Patsy" Mayes
Please share a memory of Lorena to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lorena "Patsy" Cutting Mayes, 82, former longtime resident of Bainbridge, NY, Venice, FL and most recently of Norwich, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.
She was born on February 28, 1941 in Masonville, NY, daughter of the late Leland and Annabelle Cutting.
On January 3, 1960, she was married to Donald Mayes Sr. They made their home in Bainbridge, sharing 34 happy years together before he predeceased her in April 1994.
Patsy loved children, working as a teacher's aide for many, many years, ultimately retiring under protest at the age of 75. In addition to the friends of her children, Patsy was an "adopted mom" to many of the students she worked with. Patsy also loved all animals and could not pass one by without giving it affection if possible.
She loved reading, old cars and music, from Elvis to heavy metal. She enjoyed crafting, sewing, and took great pleasure in feeding people; she was especially known for making big dinners, homemade pies and the Christmas cookies she loved to bake, share or freeze. Possessing an incredible sweet tooth herself, she also loved to eat all the desserts: ice cream, fudge, cake, you name it.
Despite a challenging childhood, Patsy lived her life to show that your circumstances need not define you. She will be remembered by her family as strong, charitable, and giving, with a great sense of humor.
She will be missed by her four children: Donald "Skip" Mayes Jr., Tim Mayes (Barb), Jon Mayes (Tammy Babcock) and Dodi McAndrew (Brian Ingham); grandchildren: Ted Mayes, Carly Mayes, Claire Carbone (Chase), Samantha Wygant (Casey) and TJ Mayes; great-grandchildren: William Carbone and Kendall, Brantley and Benson Wygant; sisters: Ginny Graham and Beverly Myers; several nieces and nephews, as well as her feline companion, Mattie.
In addition to her husband and parents, Patsy was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Penny; grandson, Augustus; several siblings; and her cherished collie, Adam, and beloved cat, Beamer.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm on September 30, 2023 at the Bainbridge United Methodist Church. A celebration of life will immediately follow in the banquet room of Galaxy Bowl, Bainbridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Patsy's memory may be directed to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, the American Cancer Society, or to a local food bank.
