Obituary of Janice Palmer Wilkinson
Please share a memory of Janice to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Janice Palmer Wilkinson, 98, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2023 at Chestnut Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oneonta.
Janice was born on August 3, 1925 in Barre, Vermont, daughter of the late Vincent and Helen (St. Cyr) Palmer. In her youth, they relocated to Bainbridge; Janice lived on the Hamilton Dairy farm with her mother and brother Vernon where she spent many happy years helping care for the cows and calves, who were, in her words, "some of the nicest people she ever met". She studied Agriculture in the Bainbridge School and was a member of the FFA. She had a wonderful time showing cattle at the Afton Fair and later led a 4H group in the local area.
During her senior year, she met her future husband, Edwin Wilkinson. They were married on December 30, 1945, sharing 58 years of marriage before he predeceased her on February 4, 2004.
Janice was a homemaker for many years while their children were young before reentering the workforce, first at the county office building, and later at Camp Brace in Masonville, where she worked her way to a Senior Stenographer. She retired in 1988.
She loved baking, needlework and sewing, but her real passion was music, taking piano lessons up until the age of 90.
She will be missed by her three children: Rebecca Wilson, Deborah (James) Volk and Clifford Wilkinson; grandchildren: Amanda (Mike) Hall, Amber Wilson, Kristopher (Kassie) Fuller, Ryann McElligott (Ted Nemtzow), Kelly McElligott, Christian (Valerie) Volk, Holly Jean Wilkinson and Jenny Sue Wilkinson; great-grandchildren: Ethan and Ava Hall, Aubrey Fuller, Ezra Nemtzow, Addy Salisbury and Marcus and Douglas Volk.
In addition to her husband and parents, Janice was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Patricia Wilkinson; grandson, Nicholas Wilkinson, and two brothers, Alton Lafayette and Vernon Palmer.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00am on October 13, 2023 in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge. Share condolences and memories with the family online at www.landersfh.com.
Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.
