Obituary of Norma Palmer

Norma Grace Hyatt Palmer passed from this life to the great and boundless future on June 4, 2024. Born June 14, 1931, in East Guilford, to Lorena Haynes Hyatt and Albert C. Hyatt, she was the youngest of three children, brother, Horace A. Hyatt and sister, Phyllis C. Hyatt Ostrander. After Albert was killed in 1933, while driving a tractor on the Monroe farm, Lorena and the children lived with their Gramp Herman Haynes. Lorena did a great job raising them on her own. Except for nine or 10 years in Sidney, Norma lived her entire life in East Guilford. She attended a two-room schoolhouse in East Guilford for three years, Bainbridge for the next two years and graduated from Sidney in the Class of 1948. She was employed by Sidney Mang Insurance, First National Bank of Sidney, Sidney Memorial Public Library and Sidney Post Office, from which she retired in 1993. She married Irving George Palmer on Oct. 19, 1950, (a Friday the 13th). They were blessed with six sons, who made their lives exciting and joyful. Thomas, Clifford, Steven, William, Patrick and Scott. The family grew to include daughters-in law, Nancy, Janine and Violet; and grandchildren, Robin,Travis, Amanda and her husband, Ian Huling, Natalie, Kerri, Kalista, Kenneth and Rebecca, who add so much happiness to the family. The family is thankful for great-grandchildren, Maxwell Joseph Huling, Lillian Marie Huling, Connor Michael Huling and Paige Zagurski. After retirement Norma joined and eventually taught senior fitness for several years. She also loved to line dance until the knees complained. She volunteered at Sidney Public Library, The Hospital coffee shop and Red Barn sales at Delaware Valley Humane Society. Norma always enjoyed taking trips, whether it was with her cousin Nedra Hyatt Ostrander when she started to travel; her sister, Phyllis; or dear friends, Brigitte Beehler, Shirley Glorius, Elizabeth Hoffstetter, Dottie Johnson, Janice Vartuli and Effie Wheeler. She visited many countries, including, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Great Britain; and cruised through the Panama Canal and Mediterranean, visiting Greece and Turkey. Her travels also covered most of the continental United States. Irv joined her in Alaska and Hawaii, though he preferred to stay home with the dogs. There were always dogs at home to walk and love. She always loved times spent with her Class of '48 friends. In the 1980's while visiting Tom in Michigan she traveled to Bois Blanc Island and fell in love with the beautiful scenery and being on the shore of Lake Huron. She visited there every year since and has a summer home there where the entire family can vacation and enjoy it. Per Norma's wishes no formal services will be held. For those who wish, contributions to Delaware Valley Humane Society or a local animal shelter in her memory would be appreciated. Even better, adopt a pet! There are so many lovely animals in need of love.
