Obituary of James I. Green
Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James “Jim” I. Green, age 78, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 20, 2024. He was born May 29, 1946 at home, in Franklin Depot. Son to Florence Leona and Ralph Daniel Green. Jim was a 1965 graduate of Sidney High School. After high school, Jim joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1965 to 1969. He proudly served in the Vietnam War and reached the rank of BT3. Jim often spoke of his time in the service, shared what life was like on his aircraft carrier, USS Forrestal CVA-59, and the countries he traveled to.
Jim returned home to Sidney and soon met the love of his life, Vicky Lynn Winans; they were married January 27, 1973. Jim and Vicky moved their growing family to Masonville, NY where their children Jeremy, Blake and Briana grew up. The family eventually settled in what is affectionately referred to as “Green Acres”.
Jim worked at The Raymond Corporation for over 20 years and worked with brother-in-law, Fred, at the Winans Fence Company. Jim was a hard-working family man who, later in life, loved working his farm, raising beef cattle and helping work the farms of local friends and family. His children and grandchildren think fondly of him spending time in the barn, building fences, doing hay, and hours cutting wood, talking and giving advice – whether those took it or not.
Jim is a lifelong member of the Masonville Fire Department, attended the Montour Falls Fire Academy and held numerous positions throughout his tenure.
Jim was a “Jack of all Trades”; he could easily fix almost anything and knew exactly where the part was or how it could be fashioned. Despite his many skills and interests and love of the outdoors, what Jim he really loved was his family; his wife of 51 years, his children and many grandchildren.
Jim is pre-deceased by his parents Florence Leona & Ralph Daniel Green, brother David and sister Karen.
Jim was survived by his wife, Vicky Lynn Winans Green, his sons Jeremy (Patty) Green, Blake (Kerri) Green, daughter Briana Green, and bonus son Matthew “Roy” (Kim) Cutting and beloved four-legged companion, Stoeger.
He is also survived by his grandchildren Joey (s.o. Meadow Wood) Woolsey, Kelsey (s.o. Kate McWhorter) Green, Connor (Mallorie) Hitchcock, Bailey (s.o. Hannah Gilbert) Green, Madeline “Gypsy” (fiancé Josephine D’Aquino) Hitchcock, Austin Merwin, Rachael (s.o. Damian Katarsky) Backus, Kylee (s.o. Damien Insinga) Merwin, Grace Green and great grandchildren Rayleigh and Hudson. Siblings Bob, Dick, Phyllis, Linda, Dwayne, Ed, Mary.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Helios Care, who provided support to Jim and his family in the last weeks of his life or to the Sidney Veterans Memorial Park. The family will hold a Celebration of Life on Sunday, July 7th at The Pines at Covered Bridge Gardens from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to join them for an afternoon of celebration, sharing of memories and stories about this for this wonderful man, husband, father, grandfather and friend.
