David S. Gatje passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at his home surrounded by his adopted family at the age of 90.
Dave was born in Bay Shore, NY on May 8, 1934, to Dr. George H and Marion (Shand) Gatje. He graduated from New York University in 1966 with a bachelor's degree in industrial relations and economics.
On September 21, 1974, he married Katherine Basta on Long Island. He and Kathy shared 40 years together until her passing on September 8, 2014.
Dave worked for 30 years at New York Telephone from 1955-1985. He began as a cable splicer and retired as plant manager.
Upon his retirement, he and Kathy moved to Trout Creek, NY. Dave became the Pastor of Trout Creek Community Church from 1992 to 2006. Upon his retirement from Trout Creek, he continued to perform weddings, renewals of vows, baptisms and funerals locally.
Dave spent the last 8 years as the adopted "grandpa" to the Sherman family. Dave was a huge fan of the Buffalo Bills (according to Dave "the ONLY true New York football team"). He loved putting on his jersey and supporting his Bills. He enjoyed being the official tester for any baked product or dessert. Dave loved helping raise and snuggle with the Bernese Mountain dog puppies that were born at the house. His strength, sense of humor, and kindness were second to none. Dave's smile would light up the room.
He was predeceased by his wife Kathy, parents George and Marion Gatje, and brother Captain George Carlisle Gatje, USN retired.
He is survived by his sons David Bruce Gatje (Teresa) of Texas and Richard Carlisle Gatje (Sheri) of Florida, 3 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, his sisters-in-law Peggy Gatje and Laura Garcia, several nieces and nephews and
friends Bill and Terri Sherman, Connor Sherman, Brandi Carufe, Molly Sherman, and Priscilla Scofield.
