George and I serviced in the Phelps Hose Company together and I have many fond memories of the fellowship we shared. George taught me how to play pitch and he and I partner together in many late-night pitch games at the Firehouse on River Street. I remember one late-night pitch game when the fire phone rang, and someone called in that the Sidney dump was burning. George and I figured the dump wasn't going any place, so we finished the hand before we manned the truck and headed to the dump fire. George and I also came up with the idea of a portable fire hydrant, so I drew up what our idea should look like, and George built in down at the shop. We used that potable hydrant for many years. George and I also came up with the idea of starting bingo to pay for a rescue truck that the Phelps Hose Company wanted to purchase. George and I were officers of Phelps Hose at the time so when Phelps Hose borrowed the money from the Bank to buy the truck all the officers had to sign the loan documents. George and I told all the member of Phelps Hose that we need to make this bingo game work, or we would be paying for a rescue truck out of our paychecks for the next 20 years.
It's memories like those that we can remember and cherish forever. I was my honor to have been able to call my friend, colleague, fellow fire fighter and pitch partner. George, may you rest in peace. Condolences to all the Pendorf family as well.
