Elsa Peterman MacDonald, 78, of Sidney, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton following a courageous battle with cancer. Elsa was born on January 20, 1933 in Maywood, NJ, a daughter of the late Emil and Dorothy (Maasz) Peterman. On October 14, 1949, Elsa married Kenneth MacDonald, Jr. in Sidney Center. He predeceased her on June 6, 1993.
In her younger years, Elsa was a homemaker and mother. She worked at At-A-Glance (Mead) and was president of their CWA Local Union then went to work for the CWA Union as their Business Manager. She returned to At-A-Glance prior to her retirement. Elsa was extremely active in her community. She was an active and longtime member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Sidney where she was a Sunday School Superintendent, helped with Wednesday Study Group, and served on the Church Council. She worked with the United Way of Sidney, serving as chairman at one point, as well as CDO Work Force and the Tri-County Labor Council. Elsa worked as an election inspector and was a member of the Delaware County Republican Committee.
She enjoyed swimming, and in her earlier years, ice skating. Elsa also loved dogs, especially Mary Jane and Hemi. She looked forward to walking Hemi every Sunday after church.

2 daughters: Lois Lavoie of West Middlesex, PA and Cathy Johnson of Sidney
2 sons: Peter MacDonald of Mt. Upton and Thomas MacDonald of Sidney
1 Grandson: Daniel Lavoie of PA
2 Granddaughters: Julie Squatrito and her husband, Robert of PA and Traci Raymond of Sidney
2 Great Granddaughters: Lainey and Jesslynn Squatrito
2 Sons-in-law: Andre Lavoie and Thomas Jeffers
Sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joyce and Bruce Alexander of Sidney
Sister-in-law, Mitzi Peterman of CA
Brother-in-law, Leo Stack of FL
Several nieces and nephews and many friends, especially Janet Bisset who helped care for Elsa during her illness
In addition to her husband and parents, Elsa was predeceased by her daughter, Carol Jeffers and her son-in-law, Edward Johnson; 2 brothers: Walter and Howard Peterman; and 3 sisters: Emily Peterman, Dorothy Forscutt and Ruth Stack.
Friends are invited to call from 12:00 noon until 1:00pm on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney, NY 13838. Funeral services will follow at 1:00pm at the funeral chapel. Burial will take place in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Lourdes Hospice, the American Cancer Society or to St. Luke's Lutheran Church.
