Joseph "Fr. Joe" Schuck, 87, of Unadilla, passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Chestnut Park Nursing Facility in Oneonta.
He was born son of the late Frederick and Anna (Bluemke) Schuck in Brooklyn, NY.
Joe graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1945, and attended 2 years at Cathedral College of the Immaculate Conception Preparatory Seminary in Brooklyn; he was accepted to study for the priesthood and was assigned to the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, LI. He was ordained a Priest on June 6, 1953. Fr. Joe was first assigned to St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Queens, he served the Parish for 22 years and then appointed to St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in Woodhaven-Ozone Park. In 1976 he moved to the family dairy farm in Afton and served the Sacred Heart Parish in Sidney and its mission stations of St. Ambrose in Unadilla and St. Paul in Franklin NY until 2003.
Fr. Joe was a dedicated advocate of Boy and Girl Scouting. In 1978, he joined Boy Scout Troop 88 and served as past Catholic Chaplain of Otschodela Council and past chairman of the Scouter Development Program of the Catholic Committee on Scouting in the Albany Diocese. Fr. Joe was recipient of the Silver Beaver in 1986. Also in 1978, he joined Girl Scout Troop 33 in Sidney and held many administrative positions. He was awarded the Thanks Badge II in 1989.
Fr. Joe was an active member of the Grange. He was a past member of the Afton and Bainbridge and the Chaplain for the Norwich Grange. In 1982, he was elected Chaplain of the Chenango County Pomona Grange #29 and in 1987, was elected Chaplain of the New York State Grange; a position he held for over 16 years. In 2000, Fr. Joe was presented the Gerald Eastman Award.

Friends may call from 4-7 PM on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel 21 Main St. Sidney. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 28, 2014 at Sacred Heart Church 15 Liberty St. Sidney. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Afton. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Chenango County Grange #29, 167 CR-32A Norwich, NY 13815 or to the Holy Myrrhbearers Monastery, 144 Bert Washburn Rd. Otego, NY 13825.
