Hazel Bonker
Sidney, NY
Hazel Irene (Schermerhorn) Bonker died on October 1, 2014 with her son, Waldo at her side. Hazel is survived by three children, Jesse Lee Stacy, Arizona, Cynthia LaPier, California and Donald E. Bonker II, Barbour Brook. She is predeceased by Donald E. Bonker who died on November 1, 2008. She is also survived by many, many grandchildren and great grandchildren from the east coast to the west. Hazel was a Licensed Practical Nurse - an occupation that she took on somewhat later than most people embrace a career, but she was passionate and excelled at her work, continuing to support people in need well into her eighties. Hazel may have been the oldest survivor of Cannonsville. Hazel always said that her years in Cannonsville were her happiest. She loved the countryside, the woods, the rivers and creeks. She loved the community and the closeness of the residents. She and Don were active bridge players. They sponsored family meals on Sundays. They hunted together, they ran the general store together. Hazel was an active member of the Merry Delvers and she was a Brownie Scout leader. It was probably the saddest day of her life when she and the family were forced to leave because of the impending flooding of the valley.
Hazel was loved and respected by all those who knew her. She always aspired to be a "lady." She was also down to earth, candid, and caring. She wanted to know about the world and travelled extensively within the United States. She wanted her children to have the best lives. She wanted them to be strong and independent. She will be missed but her legacy will remain always.
