Robert Howard King
Robert quietly passed away on June 5th, at his home at 18 Sharon Street in Sidney, NY.
He was born November 1st, 1920 in New York City to Robert Pepperrell King and Alice Raymond Smith. He grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts and Amherst, New York, where he graduated from high school in 1938. He attended Worchester Tech University shortly before being drafted into the US Army Unit 3071. There he became Quarter Master, Tech Sergeant and company clerk.
Upon leaving the Army, he continued his education at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, graduating with a bachelor's degree in Dairy Science. In June 1944, he married Claire Virginia March in Medford, Massachusetts. They lived in Williamstown, Massachusetts where he worked for Modern Dairy in North Adams. In 1959, he moved back to New York, and served as the plant manager for the Dairyman's League Creamery in Mt. Upton until 1961. His final job was working for the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets as an inspector of dairy products. He was awarded Inspector of the Year in 1984. He retired in July 1989.
Robert was predeceased by his son Laurence, and is survived by his wife Claire, daughter Virginia and her husband David R. Wormuth, grandson Matthew David, and granddaughter Lyndsay Elise and her husband Brent M. Carlson.
During his lifetime, Robert had many happy years playing the clarinet for the American Legion band in Ashfield, Massachusetts (where he was commander), cooking, square dancing, ushering for the Tri Town Theatre plays, and ferrying his grandchildren and their friends to and from school.
